How to Create the Perfect Outfit

By Amy Nelson: Creating outfits is a difficult and frustrating task when you have no idea where to start. All my life I have looked at my closet full of clothes and have had no idea how to make them all work together. Once I started my college career and had to dress business casual for class and began to dress more casual for everyday activities I learned how to pair different color wash jeans with the perfect top. In this pillar article, I will show "How-To" create the best outfits with the clothes in your closet.

First of all, you should make sure you have the basics when it comes to articles of clothing. When shopping, you should make sure that you have several different styles of jeans. There are many styles that include boot-cut, flare, skinny jeans, and have a different color wash. Jeans are the first thing you need in a wardrobe and is an essential to any outfit. Make sure that you buy the style of jeans that is the most comfortable for you, and that you will be the most confident wearing.

After you have a couple pairs of your favorite jeans, you need to also buy a couple pairs of neutral colored pants. These are pants that you will be able to pair with anything for a special or fancy occasion, whether it is a job interview or a date.

Lastly, for pants wise, you need a couple casual skirts of different styles and patterns that can be essential for either a formal or informal setting. Skirts are one of those pieces of clothing that you can throw on with a cute tank top, or blouse and makes a perfect outfit in seconds.

Moving onto tops, in my closet I have a section of plain t-shirts. These t-shirts are awesome to wear if you are going to put on a cardigan and run to the store, or you have a statement necklace that you are just dying to wear. These t-shirts are great since they come in different styles like v-neck, or scoop neck, and can easily be extremely casual with a pair of jeans, or dressed up for a special occasion.

Next are sweaters! Sweaters are such a good investment. Sweaters can be expensive depending on where you shop, but they are so worth it. Especially in the winter months, throwing on leggings and sweater is a comfy chic look that will keeping you looking and feeling great. Sweaters can also be paired with jeans and cute booties for a more put-together look. Sweaters are a one of those articles of clothing that can be more eye-catching and of brighter colors since they aren't usually over accessorized.

Last, but definitely not least, cardigans, jackets, and hoodies. I live in these. Honestly, if I am just lounging around the house or running errands, I will always be wearing a cardigan or hoodie. Hoodies are usually neutral colors since they accent the undershirt, but they can really dress up, or be worn in the colder months to still showcase the tank or t-shirt you have on underneath. They are warm, and so comfortable, but also makes it look like you spent hours getting ready.

After you have all the essentials, it is important to organize your wardrobe and make sure you have everything put together and where you want it. You also want to make sure that you can find what you are looking for, when you want to wear it. I used to always have a problem finding the exact shirt that I wanted to wear in my closet. Since I reorganized everything, I now have no problem knowing where all of my clothes are.

After finding the essential articles of clothing that you need, there is another step. It's time to accessorize! Accessorizing is the most fun part of creating an outfit. Go out to Francesca's or target, and pick out belts, earrings, simple and statement necklaces, scarfs, or sunglasses to really make your outfit stand out. Adding accessories is such an easy way to add a little oomph to your outfit and make people notice you. When choosing accessories, try to find pieces that will go with everything, so you can mix and match them with different outfits. Choose gold and silver pieces, and accessories that differ in size and pattern.

Now it's time to put the outfits together. Once you have all the things listed above, the time comes to putting the outfits together!

First thing to do when putting an outfit together is to play with patterns. Patterns are always something people stray away from because they don't know if mixing patterns is okay. Of course it is! Mixing patterns is something that will make your outfit stand out among the rest. It's important to use patterns to your advantage. Patterns can help hide problem areas or accentuate others. If you love your upper body want to draw attention to it, wear a bright colored top, and neutral patterned pant to draw attention away from your lower body, and up to the bright top.

Another thing is to layer. Layers are a great way to showcase your style and can be helpful depending on the weather. Layers allow you to show off your body in a way that also shows off your wardrobe. I love to later my clothes because you can wear a vest, or cardigan that can easily to taken off to change your style right then and there.

My last thing is just do what makes you happy. I can't tell you enough how important it is that you feel pretty and beautiful in your skin and clothing. Don't buy something that is fashion forward just because you are trying to fit in. That is the point of having your own style. You should pick out things that you think look good and then be able to use some of these How-To tips to put together an outfit that you love and feel great in!
